At Knoxville Martial Arts Academy, you will not feel judged on your first day. We prioritize a supportive, family-like culture where beginners are welcomed with open arms. This guide covers how to navigate your first visit, what to expect from our coaching, and how to prepare mentally and physically for a positive start in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or MMA.

Preparing for Your First Visit

Walking into a new gym can be intimidating, especially in combat sports where physicality is central. Preparation is the key to reducing anxiety. Before your first session, ensure you have the correct gear. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you will need a gi, which consists of a heavy cotton jacket, pants, and a belt. For no-gi grappling or MMA, rash guards and shorts are standard. If you are unsure what to buy, our staff can guide you through the basics so you do not feel out of place. For additional details, review the About Us.

Arrive early to check in and meet the front desk team. This gives you time to settle in before the class starts. Hydrate well and eat a light meal a few hours prior. You do not need to be in peak physical shape to start. In fact, most students begin with average fitness levels. The goal of the first day is to learn the basics and feel comfortable, not to exhaust yourself. For additional details, review the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
